Back in the year 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for an interview at a medical college. I figured I would book lodging upon arrival, however once I got there, a major event was happening and every single youth hostels and cheap hotels were fully booked.

As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind maybe I could spend the night at the terminal – but soon learned the local airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, closes 24 hours. Not knowing what my next move should be and feeling increasingly desperate, I hopped on a bus into town and began walking near a gaming venue, reasoning I might spend the night in a place that stayed open through the night. This was not ideal in the ideal condition for acing the admissions interview the following day, yet, as a cash-strapped student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.

The world needs more folks like that woman.

Apparently, I appeared lost since a woman saw me loitering in the city and asked if I was OK. I recounted my predicament and without hesitation she said I could sleep on the floor of her dormitory at the local university – an ideal turn of events, considering that was where the important interview was scheduled for the next day. She went further by offering me some free dinner: a leftover sandwiches she brought back her evening job. I had access to warm shower facilities and a secure location and safe to sleep.

With hindsight, I now understand the significant risk she took being a woman allowing a guy she had only just encountered sleep on her floor. In those days I was in my male privilege bubble and did not consider to such safety concerns. Now, as a father, it astounds me she did that – and remain very grateful.

Ultimately, I did not study at that university, and I lost touch with the student afterwards, yet her memory has stayed with me her selfless deed of human compassion. I hope life has repaid her generosity tenfold. We could all use more folks like that woman.
