Gas Detonation Costs Three Police Officers During Eviction Procedure in Italy
Three members of law enforcement were killed and more than a dozen people were hurt in what appears to be premeditated detonation from gas at a rural property in Italy's north.
How It Happened
The blast was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the house near Verona to carry out an eviction order for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.
All three officers killed belonged to the Carabinieri force.
Investigation Developments
A man and a woman were taken into custody at the scene and a third person who escaped after the incident was located soon after. The trio have been admitted to medical facility.
The explosion could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the location showed the property turned into a mass of wreckage.
“This is a time for grieving,” stated the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who noted that efforts had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the past.
Property Situation
The leader of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, said the residence was under an court order due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the three owners.
Negotiators had been sent to talk with the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect a family member set off the detonation.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno informed the media.
“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the detonation immediately struck our personnel,” he explained.
Petrol bombs were also found at the residence, the interior minister confirmed.
Casualties and Damage
The wounded by the incident consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as three members of national police and a firefighter.
As stated by the local prosecutor, the building was in a derelict state and had was without power.
The prosecutor believed the blast had taken place on a story above the access point and informed reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the explosion, he mentioned members had “heard a whistle, likely the propane tanks being activated”.
Community Reaction
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants told local news, mentioning that the trio had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
Defence Minister the Defence Minister stood alongside other government officials in commemorating the three officers who had died in the line of duty.
