The sport of boxing has been a real slump this year, with few major fights and markedly reduced engaging contests than usual. The possibility of a important and captivating heavyweight clash between Parker and Wardley at the London's O₂ Arena offers a welcome respite to the struggling sport. Parker, set to be 34 in January, said: “This is do or die. I am not thinking about losing. I respect my opponent and his achievements and how he has prepared for this fight. But I am on a superior tier and I am planning to demonstrate it on Saturday.”

The Perspective of Wardley

Wardley, approaching 31, and he said: “It's a huge evening for the pair of us. It is obviously the biggest fight of my professional life and the biggest fight of my life. But whenever I face a tougher opponent I excel under pressure. Saturday will be no exception. The gap between where Joe is and my perceived standing has been a frequent topic throughout my career.

“He has been going around the block for a long time, with a numerous contests on his record. By no means is he an old man but he has been in the boxing world for a long time and had numerous grueling matches. I too have faced intense battles and I understand they take a toll. He has been in a lot more of those compared to me.”

But the suspicion remains that Parker will be too seasoned, and too skilful, for his opponent. He should win a bruising battle with the confidence that he is next in line for the champion Usyk – still the world’s best heavyweight by a comfortable distance.
