Pat Bamford Joins the Blades Despite Leading Abusive Chants Targeting Coach Wilder
The striker has signed with Sheffield United just half a year following leading insulting chants aimed at their manager, Chris Wilder.
The 32-year-old striker, a free agent since leaving Leeds United, has put pen to paper on a deal with the second-tier club in difficulty until January. Bamford's seven-year spell at Elland Road finished through agreement this past summer.
Among the player's final notable acts as a Leeds player was to lead abusive songs regarding Chris Wilder amid the club’s promotion party this spring. Now, the one-cap England international will feature for Wilder as Sheffield United's boss seeks to rescue his beloved club out of the bottom places.
Past Conflict Involving Bamford and the Manager
Both men had history prior to Leeds moved up to the Premier League last season and United were defeated in the promotion decider by Sunderland. Wilder described the forward as “a muppet” when the situation was different in 2018-19 and the Blades won automatic promotion while Leeds United fell short in the playoffs.
Making Amends & Looking Ahead
All seems to have been resolved with Sheffield United, the Championship’s least productive attack, urgently requiring of a boost in attack and Bamford looking to revive his career.
The song about Wilder gained traction in April. A repentant Patrick along with Leeds boss, Daniel Farke, called Wilder the following day.
Chris Wilder stated at the time: “Spoke with Pat yesterday and I have no issue whatsoever with that. I’m not sure regarding the words used from a fellow pro! But I valued and admired him giving me a call.
“We had a short while and similarly I spoke to Daniel too and had a longer discussion together and he is a super guy, a class act. Back in my playing days we would give it and accept it and that is part and parcel of football at every level, even on a Sunday morning. I've got no problem at all. I'm fine with it and I said that to Pat.”
Recent Career Challenges
Bamford featured in 18 games with Leeds United last season however the former Forest, Chelsea FC and Boro player has struggled with injury over the past few seasons.
