The remains of a mother aged 34 and her young daughter, 10 have been found inside freezers in an apartment in the western part of Austria.

The deceased, a woman from Syria and her daughter, who had been unaccounted for for several months, were found on the end of last week. The freezers were hidden behind a false wall in the dwelling, located in the city of Innsbruck.

A pair of males, a Austrian man, 55 and his 53-year-old brother, were detained in the month of June. The elder brother, a colleague of the Syrian woman, told police last week that there had been an unfortunate event—but rejected intentional killing.

Speaking to reporters recently, a official for the state prosecutor announced the two suspects were being held on "serious suspicion of murder".

The names of those concerned have been withheld by police, in compliance with national regulations.

The family's disappearance was originally brought to light by the woman's cousin, who resides in Germany, on July 25, 2024.

Police revealed the male associate told them at the time she had embarked on an prolonged visit with her daughter to see her family in Turkey.

The victim's bank card was then noted as being active overseas on multiple occasions.

But when investigators entered the victim's residence, her mobile phone was located.

Someone also stated overhearing a disturbing sound in the apartment, and shouts of "mother" on the occasion the pair were thought to have disappeared.

A broader criminal probe was initiated, with investigators finding various messages originating from the mother's device—among them a resignation letter to her employer and messages to the male colleague.

Officials said a four-figure sum was also sent to the suspect.

The head of the State Criminal Police Office informed reporters on recently that a rented space had been leased before the mother and child went missing and a cooling unit had been placed there.

The male siblings removed the freezer from the unit on the day the victims went missing, the official revealed. And a seven days after, they purchased an additional appliance.

Authorities state they think this indicates the deaths were intentionally orchestrated.

"How they died remains unclear due to the state of decomposition of the victims," the official commented.

A legal representative—representing the state—stated the exact sequence of events is still unclear, but the bodies were carefully placed and not discovered during a previous house search.

While the suspects were arrested in June, it was not until November 12 that the elder brother confessed to an event and to concealing the remains. He denies any plan to cause death, officials confirmed.

In a related development, his younger brother acknowledged a concealment but rejected awareness of a murder.

The pair are presently in custody awaiting trial in prisons in two Austrian cities, approximately 189 kilometers away from each other.

Via a shared communication, Austria's Minister for Women and Justice Minister said the "suspected killing of two... symbolizes the abrupt and violent termination of two individuals and exposes a heartless setup".

"Females of all ages are being murdered due to the mere fact that they are of the female gender," they went on to say.

"Gender-based killings are a strongly established and widespread concern that we must address decisively."
