Wildfires Ravage WA as Thermal Readings Soar

Scorching conditions and intense bushfires have swept through the dry landscape of Western Australia. With mercury levels expected to continue soaring above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a severe heatwave warning has been declared across a large portion of the southwestern region.

Broad Extreme Heat Alerts Throughout the Region

These conditions follow this month's fires in another state, which resulted in the loss of homes and loss of life. Intense heatwave warnings have also been issued for the coming days in areas within South Australia and New South Wales, as a system of atmospheric pressure shifts to the east, delivering blazing sunshine to a broad swath of the area.

The mix of extremely dry vegetation and unbroken high temperatures presents a dangerous scenario for emergency crews.

Worldwide Climatic Events Cause Chaos

In another part of the world, a metropolis was plunged into darkness recently after strong winds damaged the city’s electrical network, with falling trees bringing down power lines. The weather conditions also caused major transport delays at a major airport, where numerous air services were cancelled. Substantial impact on power systems is expected to create further issues as utility companies scramble to reconnect electricity to over 1 million residents.

Atypical Mist Blankets Typically Clear Region

At the same time, a valley famed for its sunny weather and abundant sunlight has experienced one of its dullest and most overcast weeks on record. A specific type of low cloud, which usually lasts for only a few days, has been remarkably widespread and long-lasting this year, holding temperatures at a major airport below 8C for more than a week – the longest such streak in more than three decades. The prolonged haze has been fuelled by unprecedented autumn precipitation that resulted in the ground saturated.

  • Key Factor: Record fall rains soaked the ground.
  • Outcome: Extended and dense mist development.
  • Effect: Temperatures remained below average for an extended time.

Storm Delivers Snow to Holiday Destination

And in another country, a weather system has ushered in heavy rain, powerful winds and even snow to a set of islands – weather many would not connect with this popular tourist spot. While snow is not unknown at elevated areas, the system delivered some of the deepest accumulations since 2016 to a protected area, forcing its closure.

Alongside the snowfall, fierce winds from the north swept across the archipelago, with gusts reaching 50mph observed on several islands. The effect of the weather event is expected to diminish this week with more typical weather taking hold.
